Mechanical Engineering Technology

The mechanical engineering technology curriculum prepares graduates for employment as technicians in the diversified mechanical and manufacturing engineering fields. Mechanical engineering technicians assist in design, development, testing, process design and improvement, and troubleshooting and repair of engineered systems. Emphasis is placed on the integration of theory and hands-on application of engineering principles. Coursework includes mathematics, natural sciences, engineering sciences and technology.

Graduates of the curriculum will find employment opportunities in the manufacturing or service sectors of engineering technology. Graduates should qualify to obtain occupations such as technical service providers, materials and technologies testing services, process improvement technicians, engineering technicians, industrial and technology managers, or research technicians. Engineering technicians may obtain professional certification by application to organizations such as ASQC, SME, and NICET.

Mechanical engineering technicians assist with manufacturing processes in factories, or with development phases in research and development labs before manufacturing takes place.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, mechanical engineering technicians have an average salary of $55,820 in the state of North Carolina as of May 2020.

Mechanical engineering technicians plan, produce, and assemble new or changed mechanical parts for products, such as industrial machinery or equipment.

My mechanical engineering tech. classes have taught me the skills necessary to use cutting edge designing software to design a part in 2D & 3D, as well as machine it on the 5-axis CNC machine. It’s exciting to see a part come to life and know these are high demand skills in the job market.
