Motorsports is a complex sport and varies based on venue (including air and water), level, vehicle, fuel, sponsorships and modifications. The motorsports curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform mid-management level functions in motorsports related companies. The program is based on CBTC Annex in Cabarrus County, complete with a motorsports lab that essentially serves as a small, functioning race shop. The lab has everything from current NASCAR-style chassis to computer software and fabrication equipment that allow students to build fenders and take engines apart.

Course work includes instruction in general studies, motorsports fundamentals, principles of management, computer applications, accounting, business mathematics, marketing, advertising and sales promotion, and human relations.

Graduates should qualify for employment or advancement in jobs related to management of motorsports teams, events and activities, as well as production and distribution of motorsports products and services.

The motorsports program at Rowan-Cabarrus was the catapult to my starting my career within the motorsports industry. The knowledge learned along with the contacts made were a valuable asset when establishing myself in the industry. I am happy to be able to come back in this different role and give the guidance that was so impactful in my career to students with the same passion.

I’m proud to be a graduate of the Rowan-Cabarrus motorsports program. People don’t realize how much the industry is a part of our economy. The experience I had at the college has definitely impacted my career and contributed to my success.

While in the Rowan-Cabarrus motorsports program, Doug was a co-op student with the speedway. He is now the Executive Director of Events for Charlotte Motor Speedway.
