The Bridge Gallery

Bridges Gallery

Philosophy: The mission of Bridges Gallery is to serve the surrounding communities and provide inclusive programming that enriches lives through shared experience.  Bridges gallery will be a space for artists and community members to come together and freely explore diverse perspectives. As part of our ongoing effort to provide people with a variety of contexts, we seek artists, art groups and project proposals whose diversity of identity and communication reflect our world.

Exhibition #1 – My Views:

Bridges Gallery seeks photographic submissions for an experimental exhibition that explores the unique perspectives that make up our community and world. Open to All Students, Staff, and RCCC Faculty we are seeking photographs to be included in an installation of projected images that will coincide with the launch of Bridges Gallery,  located in the 700 building on North Campus.

Disparate personal views help build important relationships that sustain communities. They also have the power to create invisible barriers that can drive groups apart through misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

The exhibition My Views will be comprised of our community members’ literal view or vantage point. Those wishing to participate should submit a photograph that depicts a view from a window i.e. car window, dining room window, bus window etc.  (cell phone images permitted/encouraged).

*Written descriptions of images are also encouraged for those people who are more comfortable with the written word.

My Views will be accompanied by a series of film viewings and discussions including,:

  • Trevor Paglen: Art in the age of mass surveillance & Hito Steyerl: How Not to be Seen
  • John Berger: Ways of Seeing
  • Rashaad Newsome: Shade Chronicles

(Viewing dates forthcoming)

Request for Proposal – Long Branch Trail

Submission Deadline: Friday, May 25

Long Branch Trail, a 1.7-mile bicycle and pedestrian greenway, extends from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to Salem Creek Greenway in the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. This area of the Innovation Quarter was once a commercial and historically African-American residential community that blossomed in thelate 1800’s following the establishment of the now-inactive railroad line that runs along Long Branch Trail. At the time this railway connected Winston-Salem to Roanoke, VA moving Winston-Salem products such as tobacco and other goods. This early railway stimulated the booming tobacco industry, which sprang up around a freight train depot immediately south of Long Branch and brought countless workers to Winston-Salem. Today, this former railway line has been reimagined as a paved urban bicycle and pedestrian trail with benches, dog stations, trash receptacles and LED lighting. The first artistic endeavor along Long Branch Trail is the “south wall” which is located between 3rd Street and Business 40. The trail in its entirety will open in the spring of 2018.

Call to Local Artists and Eligibility

The Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, with assistance from The Arts Council of Winston-Salem Forsyth County, is seeking proposals from artists and designers. The selection committee will consider professional artists living in North Carolina and strongly encourage Winston-Salem artists to consider responding to this request for proposals.

Budget:

The Wake Forest Innovation Quarter will spend $5,000 for the entire project, inclusive of artist’s fees, materials, labor, and other expenses. No additional resources will be allocated to the maintenance of the work once complete, as such artists are encouraged to propose designs that do not require attention beyond the initial installation.

Description of Site:

The south wall is located between 3rd street and Salem Parkway to the right of Research Parkway and runs parallel to an active Norfolk Southern line. Landscaping along the wall has already been put into place and must be respected on site. Access to the site to the site is limited to biking and walking.

Wall heights vary form 2’ to 10’ height. The overall length is 385 LF+/-. A rough estimate of square footage is 3,100 SF +/-.

We also ask that applicants consider the locations relationship to the Innovation Quarter and its mission to drive economic growth and build vibrant community. No additional resources will be allocated to the maintenance of the work, once complete, as such artists are encouraged to propose designs that do not require attend beyond initial installation.

Proposal Requirements:

  1. A colored image of the proposed work and five examples of past work. Only digital images willbe accepted – please format as jpg or PDF and include descriptions noting medium and size ofpast work.
