Fire Protection Technology

The Fire Protection Technology curriculum is designed to provide students with the technical knowledge and skills necessary for advancement within the fire protection community and related firefighting industries. The program also offers a sound foundation for continuous higher learning in fire protection, administration, and management.

Coursework includes fire prevention and safety, public education, building construction, fire ground strategies and tactics, and local government finance and laws, as they apply to emergency services management. Students will learn technical and administrative skills such as hydraulics, hazardous materials, arson investigation, fire protection safety, fire suppression management, law and code.

Employment opportunities may exist with providers of emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue agencies, hospital specialty areas, industry, and educational and government agencies.

The FESHE Recognition certificate is an acknowledgement that a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the minimum standards of excellence established by FESHE professional development committees and the National Fire Academy (NFA).

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, firefighters have an average salary of $31,750 in the state of North Carolina as of May 2020.

Employment of firefighters is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030 in North Carolina.

Intense competition is expected for entry into firefighter careers, despite 17,500 new firefighter positions anticipated to open during the 2018-2028 decade.

The Fire Protection Technology program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is of vital importance to the fire service. Higher Education in this field of choice is a valuable and necessary component for successfully leading today’s fire service. The FIP program at Rowan-Cabarrus is specifically designed to provide the future leaders in the fire service with the tools needed to provide world class fire protection.
