Tobacco-Free Campus Policy

“Breathe Easy”

To set forth Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s policy to provide its students, employees, and visitors with a safe and healthful environment. Being aware of the health hazards associated with smoking and the use of other tobacco products, the Board of Trustees resolves that the college provide a smoke-free and tobacco product-free environment. The college recognizes that it has legal authority to prohibit tobacco use pursuant to G.S. 143-599.

The Board further resolves that effective August 1, 2010, there will be no smoking or use of tobacco products permitted on Rowan-Cabarrus campuses. This includes all buildings, facilities, college vehicles, walkways, out-of-doors areas, campus grounds, and parking lots.

Use of tobacco is prohibited by students, staff, faculty and visitors. For the purposes of this policy, tobacco is defined as any type of tobacco product including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, bidis, hookahs, smokeless or spit tobacco or snuff. Electronic devices that simulate smoking and that emit a vapor, including electronic cigarettes, cigars, and pipes are also prohibited under this policy.

The sale or free distribution of tobacco products, including merchandise, on campus or at college sponsored events is prohibited.
