Work-Based Learning Student of the Year
Congratulations to the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s 2019-2020 Work-Based Learning (WBL) Student of the Year and winner of the 2019 North Carolina Work Based Learning Student of the Year (William D. Weston Outstanding Student of the Year), Hope Bovard!
Here are some of Hope’s accomplishments this past year:
- Cabarrus Early College of Technology student
- Interned at the NC Music Hall of Fame and North Carolina Museum of Natural Science in summer 2019
- Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
- Accepted in NC State University for fall 2020
- Participated in 28 mile hike to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation
- Tutored youth with visual impairments (teaching them to read and write Braille)
- Volunteered with multiple organization such as Team FarSight Foundation, MIRA USA, and SEE Adventure Camp
- Guest speaker for Raleigh Lions Club, Mt. Pleasant Lions Club, MIRA @ Petco, and Cabarrus County School District Convocation
Work-Based Learning Exceptional Students
The following students have gone above and beyond in their internship assignments. They are being recognized for being an asset to their employer and the WBL program.
First off, I am very grateful for the opportunity of being able to participate in the Work-Based Learning Program. I experienced my internships at Community Free Clinic in Concord and at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. I had a great time at both of these facilities! The amount of knowledge and skills I gained at both of these places is tremendous. The experience of being in the environment and seeing what a day to day is like in the field of study I am in is amazing and a great eye opener. I am very honored and pleased to say that I have been hired by Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. It felt great that half-way through my internship at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center I was given the opportunity to take on a permanent position. Thank you Work-Based Learning!
My internship experience at Day and Nite All Service was great! I was able to sharpen my Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration skills and I was provided with the opportunity to gain hands on experience, giving me a better understanding of the industry. Because of my internship, I was able to see a future in my field of study and halfway through my internship with Day and Nite, I was hired there. My internship benefited me greatly by helping me prepare for the next step in my career. Work-Based Learning is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who wants a learning experience in their field outside of the classroom.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to intern with my own institution (RCCC) for two semesters and I must say that was one of the best decisions I have made so far. During my internship I met an amazing team that I worked with and I learned a lot about my career and about how the real world job environment works. I came to realize that what you learn in the classroom is just the foundation for the career you desire. From experience I can say that the classroom is not enough to get the growth and experience you need for the real world. Internships give you the hands-on skill and experience you need, so why not take advantage of interning? I did and today I’m one step forward in my career journey!
I have been a part of the Work-Based Learning Internship program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for the past three semesters and it has been one of the best experiences throughout my time here. During my internships, I gained so much work experience and skills and I have met some of the most amazing people on and off campus. This experience has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and have more confidence in myself professionally. I would suggest the Work-Based Learning Internship program to anyone who is looking to gain experience in their field of study.
I landed an internship with Urbane Environments, a consulting agency that helps shape public, private and municipal development plans, through the Rowan-Cabarrus Work-Based Learning program. There, I was able to participate in a variety of projects including the City of Charlotte rebranding. The experience enhanced my leadership skills and reinforced my resume with notable work experience. If you truly desire to reach your personal best as a successful businessman or businesswoman, this is where you start. Work-Based Learning is a pioneering force to help you become an employer’s first and only choice.
Advertising and Graphic Design student Jeinny Lopez Isep was able to intern with the North Carolina Music Hall Of Fame during the summer semester and loved it so much she’s doing a second internship this fall. Visitors can see one of her projects front and center, as she created the banners that hang on the outside of the building in Kannapolis.
