About the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission (SACSCOC) is committed to enhancing the quality of education offered to students at all colleges. As a part of the reaffirmation process, SACSCOC requires institutions to develop a plan that demonstrates continuous improvement through institutional effectiveness efforts. The QEP describes a carefully designed and focused plan of action that enhances student learning (student learning is defined broadly) or the environment supporting student learning. The QEP must be a campus-wide project that is planned and implemented, consistent with the institution’s strategic plan and tied to the college’s mission.

Through the QEP, the college complies with the expectations of the SACSCOC Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement. The QEP planning team engages with the college community in selecting and developing a topic, using a participatory and evidence-based process to assist in selecting and developing the QEP.

QEP for 2015-2020

Rowan-Cabarrus’ proposed Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focuses on helping students plan their career goals while building career connections through seminars, online resources, co-ops, and service learning that support career experiences and placement. By focusing on students’ career-based knowledge and connections, RCCC seeks to improve student persistence and retention.

In November 2011, the QEP Planning Committee, comprised of administrators, faculty and staff from various departments, met to discuss the QEP. Based on SACSCOC guidelines, the committee solicited faculty and staff input to identify potential topics, and through the use of 2 surveys administered to all college employees, career emphasis was agreed as the topic of the QEP. The Planning Committee reviewed survey feedback, CCSSE results and best practices from research to determine the most beneficial career-related activities for the QEP. Over a 12-month period, the committee met monthly, shared research findings and wrote a proposal that was subsequently adopted for development. From the initial Planning Committee, three subcommittees were established to review literature and best practices, develop a marketing campaign, and plan QEP-related professional development activities for faculty and staff. A Steering Committee was assigned to create an exploratory career writing assignment and develop a virtual employment resources center. In its formative stage, the QEP was vetted by the Dean’s Council, academic programs staff, student services staff, continuing education staff and instructors, the Faculty Association and Vision 20/20. Suggestions from all groups resulted in a multi-faceted approach focused on developing students’ career experiences throughout their studies at Rowan-Cabarrus. The President’s Cabinet subsequently approved and funded the QEP proposal.

QEP Objectives

The proposed QEP is comprised of activities intended to measure and promote students’ career-focused learning and retention. Objectives are:

  • Increase student semester-to-semester retention
  • Increase student program completion
  • Increase student confidence in educational and career planning
  • Improve career resources based on student feedback
  • Provide students with knowledge and resources needed to accomplish career development and job search goals

Students will participate by 1) exploring their prospective careers in selected ENG 111 classes, 2) utilizing career counseling services through student services, 3) experiencing a co-op or service learning opportunity and 4) using the Virtual Employment Career Center (VERC) to create resumes, cover letters, and explore local career opportunities. The QEP encourages students to make career connections through developing a career plan and gain networking experience through participating in some or all of the activities previously outlined.

QEP Analysis

Through the proposed QEP, the college will engage in both direct and indirect data analyses. Methods will include data collection and reporting, questionnaires and surveys.
